~ * ~ * ~

You look around the world map and head South.

> The sun is high in the sky and your shadow is dancing on the cliffs. You are in the "Dark Valley" region, part of the Kingdom of Varon. From here you can head west into the "Rage" region, where the sun sets in a sea of blood, or you can head south into the "Despair Canyon" region, where the sun sets in a black hole. There is also the "Witches' Place"--a dark and forbidden region where you will find no law, only chaos.

You sigh and talk out loud to yourself. "Well, this is an entirely too depressingly named Kingdom. Who's in charge of this stuff?"

> You cannot answer yourself on this matter. You decide to head for the Witches' Place, at least that sounds like there's people there. You'd rather not be eaten by a pack of angry wolves, after all. Or whatever else may exist out here in Varon. You're not eager to find out. You walk down the rocky corridor with the cliff on your right.

You check your inventory before you do anything else.

> You have a meager starting selection of healing items, as well as your massive axe, which is heavy with an enchantment. You are, however, well equipped for battle, in terms of your specialization, as your character sheet indicates.

You investigate the enchantment on your axe.

> As you move closer to the enchantment, you can see that it is quite powerful and you are not sure you should use it just yet. The enchantment on your axe is "Scorching.". You can see that it is tied to your specialization. When you use this axe, the flames that come out of it are hot enough to burn through solid stone. This must be a very special weapon.

You begin your journey to Witches' Place, encountering a low level monster.

> The path to the Witches' Place is steep and narrow, almost like a canyon. The walls of the cliffs are vertical and slick, with roots sticking out everywhere. You grip your axe tightly, preparing for anything. From the cracks in the cliff appears a brutal and bloodthirsty creature. This is the "nightwolf." They are fast and agile, but also incredibly dangerous.

You fight the nightwolf in turn-based combat.

> The nightwolf is fast and strong, but you have the reach advantage, and the element of surprise. After a few tradings of blows, you emerge victorious. You have slain the nightwolf. You look at your fallen foe. The nightwolf is a fierce and beautiful creature, and a terrible enemy. You gain experience points and ascend a level, which in turn gives you a nice boost to your stats. This is probably the best way to start your journey in the "Dark Valley.”

You continue fighting low level creatures on your way to Witches' Place.

> You continue your descent down the narrow path, cleaving through the foliage that clings to the steep walls. You keep your eyes peeled for low level creatures, and fight them when they appear. Soon you reach a bottom that cannot be seen-- it is so dark you cannot even see its bottom. The forest opens up into a large meadow, dotted with the glowing lights of tents and yurts. There are some cottages, as well. A sign nearby welcomes you to Witches' Place.

You find a local and ask about what Witches’ Place is.

> A group of local witches-- old hags, ugly and ugly men, and a beautiful girl, all holding hands and dancing around a small fire-- greet you when you enter.

You say "Greetings! I am Redwood, I'm new to the kingdom. What can you tell me about your town?"

> "Darkness rules here," says the ugly male witch. "Ever since the dark dragon the King of Varon used to cast the Night Trap spell on us covered the sun with his cruel wings, we have only known darkness."

You wrinkle your nose a bit. "That's depressing. That must have been the dragon I saw fly away after destroying the Balcony House Inn."

> "The very same," the old male witch says. "How unfortunate for someone new to our realm to encounter the dragon, though you are lucky you survived."
"My axe saved me," you say. "I have come to seek knowledge, for I am new here."
"Come into our circle," the ugly female witch says.

You sit in the witch circle with the others. "Do you know why I've come to this realm? I am not from here."

> "Yes, I can see that. Do you think you will find the truth in my humble abode? Tell me your story, and what you seek. Perhaps I can help you."

You enter their home and begin to explain how you was in your own world fighting off monsters in the sky, fell down, and woke up here instead.

> The witches sit silently, but attentively, as you tell your tale. They seem to believe you.
After you finish, the pretty one says, "The truth can be found in the Night Valley. Go, and may darkness never cover the sun."
"I can go with you, if you like." says the young, beautiful witch.

You look at the young witch and smile. "And who might you be?"

> "I am Sterling," she replies. She blushes, then continues more seriously, "I am one of the greatest diviners of this town. I can go with you into the Night Valley, and show you where the truths wait to be found."

You examine Sterling the Diviner.

> In her hand she holds a staff, carved from the trunk of a long-dead redwood tree, with several coils of rope attached at the top. Her features include a pair of large horns rising from her temples, and large ears that stick out sideways. She is wearing a long, black gown, with a hood that hides her hair, which is dyed a deep red.

You look at Sterling's staff. "Hey, my name is Redwood, and your staff is made out of an actual redwood."

> "Yes," she replies, "for as long as the redwoods live, so shall this be. I am Sterling."
"For as long as the redwoods live, so shall this be. Does that include me since Redwood is my name?"
"It does," she says.

You smile smugly at her, winking. "The ladies also call me a Redwood staff."

> She raises her eyebrows and giggles. "Oh, really?"

You say "Wow, I can't believe my flirting is working already."

> Her face turns serious again. "You need not fear me, newbie."
"I don't fear anyone," you say.
"Good for you," she says.

You have Sterling the Diviner join your party.

> You have her join your party. You are standing in the middle of the path, with all the witches' cabins surrounding you, and the path itself passing through the center of the village.

You check Sterling’s character stats on the menu screen.

> Sterling has a character stats screen, just like you. Her character is a "divining" character, and as such she has some extra perks. She can heal. She can also see through the dark. That last one is particularly useful in this place. Not only can she see things in the dark, but she can also go unseen in the dark. She comes with an item called Candles, used in her sub-command of divining. Candles allow her to do various magic effects like find hidden items, and reveal the secrets of the dead. You hope you never have to use that last one.

You level up in the forest around Witches’ Place.

> You now have two levels, one for each of you, so the game is actually moving along. The only thing left is to actually go into the Night Valley and do some exploring.

You look over at Sterling. "Where is Night Valley anyway? Which way are we traveling? Is it anywhere near the places on the map called Rage or Despair Canyon?"

> "Night Valley is where you go when the Day turns to Night. Rage and Despair are the names of the two canyons you must pass through to get there."

You say “So it’s back far north of here.”

> "Yes. It is a long and difficult journey, but I have taken the staff of a true divining witch, and I will not fail. Fear not, I will guide you. Onward."

You say "You sound really confident! I like that in a woman."

> Sterling's face turns serious, and she blushes.
"Trust me, the farther north you go, the more scared you will get."
You raise an eyebrow, and she says, "The reason I know is that I have searched for years, and the further north you go, the more monsters you will find."
"Monsters! Are you sure we won't find any cute girls?" you pout. "I'd rather find a den full of willing women. Now that'd be nice to get bitten by, don't you think? A nice, beautiful woman willing to..."
You are interrupted by a yell from the forest behind you, and you both turn. A woman is running towards you, and she looks scared out of her wits.

You look at the woman. "Well, speak of the devil. Hey miss, you okay?"

> The woman is gasping for breath, her body turning ashen.
She collapses to the ground, and you kneel down to help her.
"What...what happened?" you ask.
"It's...it's the Night Val...it's the Night Val..." is all she can get out before she begins to sob. "Bandits...many bandits..."
"Night Val?" you ask.
"It's the Night Valley. You must go..."
"Night Valley? I'm trying to get to the Night Valley. What is this all about?"
"Bandits possessed by the dark dragon have taken over Night Valley!"

You look at Sterling. "Hey Sterling, can you heal this woman? It sounds like you and I got a nice hot mess ready to greet us when we get to our destination."

> "I will take care of her, don't worry about that."
Sterling walks up to the woman, and takes out a small bottle.
"Here, drink this. It will help to prevent the effects of night blindness. We have time to spare, so I will fix you up later."
"Thank you. I...I appreciate it."

You look at the scared lady. "I'm Redwood. I'm headed for Night Valley. What's your name? Do you know how many bandits are out there?"

> "My...my name is Melinda. The dragon...he's taken over Night Valley. He's a terrible thing. He's..."
"The dragon has taken over Night Valley!" you exclaim. "What a rude bastard."
"You must go...north. The canyon...it's the only way."

You rub your forehead. "We're camping here while Sterling tends to your injuries, Melinda. I'll set up a campfire and cook us some dinner. Let me find something to hunt. Tell me about the bandits."

> "There are many bandits...all over the place. The dragon terrorizes them...they're worse...they're worse than the monsters…"

You say "Take some breaths and calm down, Melinda. Let me hunt you some dinner."

> The woman gulps hard, then lets out a shaky sigh.
"Thank you. Will you...please?"
"You're welcome. Let's go hunting."

You scrounge up some meat and fruit for dinner, using herbs found while hunting to flavor it.

> You collect various herbs and roots while you're out hunting. You find that you can blend the herbs and roots to create various mixtures, from which you can brew tea. You hunt down a massive elk and a black bear, and once you have the ingredients, you turn to your new friend and begin to make a massive stew and brew the herbs and fruit into a tea.
You sit outside your small shelter, eating and drinking and watching the sunset over the mountains.
You've just finished eating when you hear a howl in the distance.
"Oh, great. More monsters."

You save the game before getting into combat.

> The howl is closer. You know it's not going to be your run-of-the-mill tiger or wolf. This is a werewolf. A black wolf, with glowing, yellow eyes. This is a boss fight! The werewolf looks at you and says,
"I see you have an unappealing companion. Who is this?"
"I'm Redwood, and if you call any woman I'm with unappealing ever again, I will kill you on the spot."
The wolf looks at you, then at Sterling, then back to you.

You pull out your axe and activate the Scorching enchantment. "I mean it. Back off."

> "That axe is worthless against me." The werewolf says. "I am an Alpha werewolf. It is my duty to kill everyone who opposes me."

You say "Alpha wolves are a myth based on bad science, you dumb motherfucker."

> "I am very real, and I will not be threatened by a peasant such as yourself." The Alpha growls.
"Wow, you're dumb." You say.
"Dammit! I will not tolerate being called names such as these by a simpleton such as yourself!" That's more like it. The Alpha is showing some character, even if he is a bastard. It's time to fight the boss! What command will you use first?
